The Dhaka University Senate at its annual meeting held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Saturday night passed a Tk 314.53 crore budget for the fiscal year 2013-14.
Earlier on June 28, the syndicate members approved the budget, placed by the university treasurer Kamal Uddin, but the Senate could not pass the budget due to quorum crisis.
The senate members at the meeting on Saturday night proposed increasing allocation for research works and student affairs.
In the budget, research sector would get Tk 2.71 crore out of Tk 32.99 crore while Tk 204.54 crore or 64.04 percent would be spent on salaries of teachers and staff.
The University Grants Commission would allot Tk 259.50 crore while Tk 31 crore would come from the university’s internal income particularly from fees of students.
The senate members at the meeting also called for taking initiative to ensure quality education free of cost at higher level.
‘The university authorities should make the education free of cost and meet the demand by boosting income from internal resources,’ said senate member Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, also chief executive officer of private television channel Baishakhi Television.
The senate members urged the university authorities to set up fund to run the university smoothly.
DU vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique who presided over the meeting detailed different activities of the university during the last year.
Pro-vice-chancellor (academic) Nasreen Ahmad and pro-vice-chancellor (administration) Shahid Akhtar Hossain and registrar Rezaur Rahman, among others, attended the meeting.
However, senate members of BNP-Jamaat-backed white panel walked out of the meeting two times.
The white panel senate members, led by Sadrul Amin, staged a walkout as the vice-chancellor barred them from talking before his welcome speech.
When they joined the meeting again and Sadrul Amin started criticising the current activities, Arefin Siddique intervened and announced break for Magrib prayers.
Another white panel member Tajmeri SA Islam criticised the administration for forgery in Ka unit admission tests held on Friday.
As pro-Awami League blue panel members lodged protest, white panel members walked out of the meeting again.
