A trial court in Dhaka has sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment in Sima Mitra murder case.
The fourth additional metropolitan sessions Judge, ATM Habibur Rahman Bhuiyan, handed down the verdict on the victim’s husband, Provath Chandra alias Bikash, on November 28.
After 20 years, the court also acquitted the alleged lover of her husband, Eti Sarkar.
Bikash was sent to jail after the verdict.
The trial of the case started August 8, 1995.
Rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra assisted the prosecution to continue the trial.
The then inspector of the Criminal Investigation Department, Alamgir Kabir, filed the murder case on June 7, 1994 against her husband and Eti.
Bikash and Sima had wedded May 11, 1993 and he started torturing Sima since after she had conceived.
According to the case detail, the couple had altercations over the love affairs of Eti.
On December 6, 1993, Sima sustained burn injuries in their bedroom at about 1:30am but her husband remained unhurt.
She died August 8, 1993 at a hospital.
