Teachers vow to continue agitations
Jahangirnagar University teachers once again besieged the vice-chancellor, Anwar Hossain, in his house, pressing for his resignation. The teachers under the banner of General Teachers’ Forum laid the siege to the vice-chancellor’s house Monday night and said the programme would continue until Anwar resigned. Teachers have been demonstrating on the campus since April for Anwar Hossain’s resignation.
Teachers’ forum leader Hanif Ali at a press conference on Tuesday noon declared that they would continue their siege programme until their demands were met.
Anwar Hossain urged the agitating teachers to call off the movement and go back to the classes.
Shikkhak Sikkharthi Karmakarta Karmachari Oikya Forum in the evening brought out a torch procession on the campus, demanding vice-chancellor’s resignation and demanding immediate announcement VC panel polls.
The General Teachers’ Forum held an eight-day sit-in from October 1 in front of the vice-chancellor’s residence.
The forum also confined the registrar and the deputy registrar in their offices from September 30 to October 8.
The forum had kept Anwar confined to his house from August 21 to August 24.
The General Teachers’ Forum alleged that Anwar did not take any steps after a teacher was assaulted by a BCL leader.
He also violated freedom fighter’s quota, recruited incompetent people as teachers, made harsh
comments about the teachers to the media, they added.
They also alleged that Anwar had misused university funds, and forcibly entered the vice-chancellor’s office by ignoring the demonstrations of the teachers.
Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association, since April 27, demanded the resignation of the vice-chancellor, accusing him of not taking punitive measures against the university unit Chhatra League’s general secretary Rajib Ahmed Russell who assaulted lecturer in economics Nurul Haque, also a syndicate member, on April 6.
