Political analysts, university teachers, economists, lawyers, businessmen, artiste and common people in their interviews with The Bangladesh Today on Wednesday called upon the BNP-led four-party alliance to accept the election results and work together with the AL in order to ensure overall development of the country and its people.
Dhaka University teacher and incumbent Chairperson of International relationship Ruksana Kibria, eminent Lawyer M Zahir, political analyst Badaruddin Omar, artiste Kiron Chandra Roy and other professional expressed their opinion about what should be the next steps of BNP and said the party should go to the parliament to pin point the government’s faults. They also said BNP will have to analyse why the party was defeated in the election.
Ruksana Kibria said if BNP remains at its stand in denying the election result, it can bring another disaster for the country. “Following corruptions and other irregularities, BNP’s image had been tarnished widely. So BNP should take step to overcome its present situation in the greater interest of the party by participating in the national parliament and cooperating with the next government. If BNP does not attend the parliament, it is apprehended that uncertainty and frustration will grip the people again. If the party launches movement like hartal, blockade and other programmes, there will be no change in our political culture,” she further said.
Badruddin Omar said BNP should go to the parliament and cooperate with the government to quicken the progress of democracy and over all development. “BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia should accept the result and go to parliament in bid to make it effective. If BNP wants to do well for the country and its people, the party would have to shun the path of hartal, blockade and other destructive initiatives. BNP would not be benefited rejecting the election results as BNP was defeated in the national parliament election mainly due to encouraging Jamaat’s obnoxious activities.”
Eminent Lawyer M Zahir said BNP should be invited to various parliamentary standing committees. “Side by side BNP should also cooperate with the government in the greater interest of the country. The parliament will be effective if it is formed on the basis of majority rule and minority rights.”
Kiron Chandra Roy, a folk singer, said from right now BNP should put pressure on the Awami League-led grand alliance to implement its election manifesto for meeting people’s demand. “I hope if BNP is consciously able to play its role as opposition in the parliament for the peoples’ interest, its image will be regained.”
Azizul Haque, a businessman in the city’s Paltan area said accepting the election result, BNP should stand by the people and work together with a view to developing the country’s economy. “I want to continue my business. If hartal and other movements are launched by the BNP, our business and country’s economy would be affected,” the businessman apprehended.
Talking to this correspondent a group of common people requested BNP not to launch any sorts of destructive programmes. “As we are common people, we will have to live from hand to mouth. That is why, we want to do our work properly in a congenial atmosphere. The party should go to the parliament for the betterment of the people. We don’t want to witness violence any more. We want peace,” they said.
