A children’s art competition and discussion session was held in Barisal to celebrate the birth centenary of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin on Friday.
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Barisal district branch, organised the programme at the Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city.
Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner; Abuul Kalam Azad, additional deputy commissioner (education and development); Pankaj Roy Chowdhury , district children affairs officer; and advocate S M Iqbal, cultural activist discussed on life and achievements of the Shilpacharya. President of Barisal Sangskritik Sangathan Samannya Parishad Syed Dulal presided over the discussion session.
The speakers at the programme expressed that the younger generation should learn more about Zainul, the pioneer of the modern art movement in the country.
To be a great artist like Shilpacharya, today’s artists should nurture the humanitarian facet of the great maestro, speakers concluded.
After the discussion session, around 80 children took part in the art competition. The young artists expressed themselves through an array of colourful paintings with various topics.
Zainul Abedin, who was born in December 29 in 1914 and died on May 28 in 1976, got his breakthrough in 1944 with his paintings on the 1943 Famine. Like many of his contemporaries, his paintings on the famine are his signature works.
