A total of 277 trees in the capital’s Mirpur Zoo got labels yesterday through an initiative of two environmental organisations, Toru Pallab and Prakriti o Jibon Foundation.
“The zoo is a very popular spot among city dwellers and most visitors are children. While they are learning about the animals, they can learn about the trees as well,” said Toru Pallab General Secretary Mokarram Hossain.
Although National Botanical Garden of Bangladesh is next door, the zoo attracts more visitors and therefore should be used to increase awareness about flora, stated
the initiators.
Horticulturalists, birdwatchers and environmental enthusiasts congregated to rediscover the zoo’s greenery while experts went round teaching the weekend crowd
characteristics of each tree, the most common of which were mahogany, sofeda (sapodilla) and krishnachura (flame tree).
Toru Pallab will periodically initiate awareness drives to get visitors acquainted with the flora.
