Dhaka stocks ended flat for the second trading session on Thursday, the last trading session of the week, with a decreased turnover due to a lower participation of institutional investors.
The benchmark general index of Dhaka Stock Exchange, DSEX, finished at 4,759.32 points, shedding 0.09 per cent or 4.38 points. DS30, the blue-chip index of the DSE, however, increased by 0.19 per cent or 3.22 points to close at 1,696.65 points.
Market operators said institutional investors decreased their participation on the trading floor as they found that most of the share became overpriced after the rise in recent weeks.
Some institutional investors are on sell-offs mode to adjust their capital market exposures, they said.
Profit-taking move and scrips changing tendency of investors were also behind the negative ending on the day, they said.
DSES, the Shariah index of the bourse, declined by 0.08 per cent, or 0.85 points, to close at 995.74 points on Thursday.
Of the 287 shares and mutual funds traded, 136 advanced, 125 declined and 26 remained unchanged.
Turnover at the DSE dropped to Tk 533.90 crore which was Tk 572.40 crore in the previous trading session.
‘Imitating the last few sessions, opening upbeat vibe of today’s [Thursday] session subsided and turned negative over selling pressure,’ IDLC Investments said in its daily market commentary.
It said, ‘Apparent cool down of market rally continued to fuel realisation of quick profit. Consequently, the DSEX closed at 4,759 points, remaining below 4,800 points level for the last four sessions.’
‘However, spurred by some mid capitalised scrips, the blue-chip index outperformed the prime index to be in green zone,’ IDLC said.
Delta Life Insurance led the turnover leaders with its shares worth Tk 45.35 crore changing hands.
Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company, Square Pharmaceuticals, Olympic Industries, Jamuna Oil, Meghna Petroleum, Bangladesh Building Systems, Dhaka Electric Supply Company, Southeast Bank and Bangladesh Shipping Corporation were among the other turnover leaders.
Dhaka Electric Supply Company gained the most on the day with an 8.45-per cent increase in its share price, while Reckitt Benckiser lost the most, shedding 5.95 per cent.
