Artistes of Shadhona delighted the audience at the premier show of its latest dance production Premamritam at the Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Sunday evening.
Premamritam is the part of a project to popularise the traditional Vishnupriya Manipuri dance by Shadhona in association with the Moulvibazar-based theatre troupe Manipuri Theatre. Directed by Sweety Das Chowdhury, Premamritam is a popular tale from the Vaishnava Padavali, which depicts the love between lord Krishna and Radha.
The dance production, based on the local form of classical manipuri dance genre expressed as Bishnupriya Manipuri dance, however, narrates only the episode of Radha’s longing for Krishna.
The show begins with a spectacular instrumental display by the traditional Manipuri artistes, which demonstrates the spirit of love of the legends.
Subsequently, the dancers of the troupe start performing in slow and graceful manner with chanting of a Hindu verse. The dancers give a touching presentation of Radha’s beautiful imaginations.
Another interesting aspect of the production was portrayal of two Krishna characters: one represents Radha dream and another is the real one.
‘Radha is the symbol of physical world while Krisha is the symbol of the metaphysical world and when the two unite, they become Premamritam or param amrito (extreme ambrosia). The production reveals how Radha united with Krishna,’ explained Sweety Das Chowdhury about the production to New Age.
‘We have worked a lot and also tried our best to depict the story as detailed as possible. I hope the audience will love it,’ she added.
A good number of viewers enjoyed the show. ‘The production was very colourful one and full of beautiful and well-synchronised dancing,’ said Golam Rosul, a government service holder, who enjoyed the show.
