Prachyanat, one of the popular theatre troupes, staged its acclaimed play Kinu Kaharer Thetar at Experimental Theatre Hall of
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Monday.
The play, which is the 15th production of Prachyanat,
was staged as its regular show.
Written by Manoj Mitra and directed by Kaji Taufiqul Islam Imon, the play criticises, in witty and humorous ways, both the leadership and the system and idea of justice.
It revolves around an imaginary country named Putna, ruled by a deceitful king. The story begins its course when the minister of Putna province molests a woman, and the king, like other such crimes done by high-ups, lets it go.
But a problem, severe for the king, arises when the English Lord issues an order: ‘If this doesn’t get justice I will toss the throne’. The king finds himself in dilemma as the minister is his closest mate and he depends on him very much. He advises the minister to falsely fix a man to admit the crime as his and take the punishment.
Accordingly, a man named Ghontakorno admits of being the criminal and in return his wife Jogodombha takes four bags of money from the king.
This incident leads to such developments that every day, thieves, dacoits and criminals start showing up to Ghontakorno to ask him for confessing to their crimes and take the punishments in exchange of money.
The play, however, ends with the king committing a crime for which he is sentenced to death and he tries to hire Ghontakorno but is refused.
‘The imaginary Putna is not alien to us. Modern states are more or less similar to Putna in their hypocrisy’, said the director.
