Fish prices remain high
The prices of beef and egg increased in the city’s retail markets over the week due to supply shortage after Eid-ul-Fitr vacation. Traders said that the supply of cow decreased after Eid that caused price hike of beef. The price of beef increased by Tk 20 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 300-Tk 310 a kg over the week. The price of egg increased by Tk 4 a hali (four pieces) and the item was selling at Tk 32 a hali in the city.
Habibur Rahman, a trader at Rampura kitchen market, told New Age that during the Eid festival the price of egg decreased as most of the people went out of city to celebrate the festival and at the same time the production in the confectionaries in the city was halted.
After Eid vacation people started to return to the city and demand for the item has increased, he said.
Abul Bashar, another trader at Shantinagar kitchen market, said that since the Eid vacation the demand for beef increased in the city and the price of cow also soared in the period.
After Eid the market has seen a shortage of animals and that is why the price of beef increased, he said.
The prices of broiler and mutton, however, remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 150-Tk 160 a kg and Tk 460-Tk 480 a kg respectively on the day.
The prices of vegetables decreased a bit in the kitchen markets.
Aubergine was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg, tomato at Tk 130 a kg, cucumber at Tk 30, papaya at Tk 30 a kg, okra at Tk 40 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 50a kg in the city’s kitchen markets on Friday.
Price of green chilli remained high and the item was selling at Tk 120-Tk 160 a kg over the week.
Price of onion remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 40-Tk 45 a kg on the day.
The prices of fish remained high.
Rohita was selling at Tk 300-Tk 350 a kg, katla at Tk 280-Tk 350 a kg, pangas at Tk 150-Tk 200 a kg and tilapia at Tk 150-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
The prices of unpacked soya bean and super palm oil remained unchanged and the items were retailing at Tk 112 a kg and Tk 83 a kg respectively.
The price of bottled soya bean oil (five litres) remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 540 to Tk 560 in the city’s kitchen markets.
Ginger price remained unchanged and the commodity was retailing at Tk 200-Tk 240 a kg.
Red lentil imported from Turkey and Canada was selling at Tk 85-Tk 90 a kg over the week.
The fine variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 130 a kg on Friday while its local variety was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
Garlic price remained unchanged and the local garlic was selling at Tk 90 a kg while the imported one was retailing at Tk 100 a kg.
Potato was selling at Tk 24-Tk 26 a kg over the week.
The price of sugar decreased by Tk 2 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg on Friday.
The fine varieties of miniket rice were selling at Tk 48-Tk 50 a kg while the coarse varieties were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg.
The fine varieties of BR-28 rice were selling at Tk 42-Tk 44 a kg and the coarse varieties of parija were selling at Tk 38-Tk 40 a kg.
