Celebration Of 110th Years Of Services
MCCI seeks govt policy support to bring ‘Bangladesh Miracle’ into reality
The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Saturday sought policy support from the government to bring ‘Bangladesh Miracle’ into reality for ensuring potential economic growth of the country. At an event celebrating the 110th years of services of the chamber at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital, MCCI president Rokia Afzal Rahman said that China and South Korea had changed their economic status, which is being called ‘Miracle’, with the policy supports of their respective governments to private sectors.
‘Bangladeshi businesses can definitely bring about Bangladesh Miracle and for that we need all-out policy support from the government,’ she said.
Government policy support is crucial for ensuring potential economic growth, she said.
The MCCI organised a two-day series of programme at different venues in Dhaka that ended on Saturday to celebrate its 110th years of services.
At the main event at the BICC, former Indian president APJ Abdul Kalam presented the key note paper on ‘sustainable development system for a peaceful and prosperous global society’.
At the programme, finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith hoped that Bangladesh would come out of the cycle of average 6 per cent growth in the current fiscal year as, so far, things are going good.
‘I am not happy about the average growth that the country has been maintaining from 5.7 per cent to 6.7 per cent over the last few years despite global financial crisis,’ he said.
Bangladesh has a potential to grow faster and hopefully in the current fiscal year the country will get rid of this average growth rate, he said adding that the development would continue in the next five years.
Bangladesh succeeded to overcome the global crisis following two strategies — maintaining strong domestic demand and keeping pace in internal resource mobilisation, he said.
On the occasion, the MCCI adopted a new logo and published two new books on its activities and APJ Abdul Kalam unveiled a pictorial record of the leading trade body in the country.
He also gave some books for MCCI library.
Ministers, business leaders, politicians and eminent personalities joined the programme.
Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed said that Bangladesh was going to become a rice exporting country from once food shortage one.
‘We are going to export 50,000 tonnes of rice to Sri Lanka this year,’ he said.
Prime minister’s international affairs adviser Gowher Rizvi said that though Bangladesh economy grew very well, its full potential was yet to be realised due to slow development in power, transportation and other infrastructure.
The government has taken various mega projects to develop power and infrastructure situation, he said.
