The telecom ministry has asked the telecom regulator to explain the media reports that said that Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission topped in the financial irregularities among government agencies, said officials. BTRC officials said the telecom ministry asked to explain and give the regulator’s opinion about such report. The Comptroller and Auditor General, Masud Ahmed, on November 25 in a press briefing said that BTRC topped in financial irregularities among the 17 audit reports his office had placed to the president.
The CAG office conducted special audit on the BTRC from 2001-2002 to 2009-2010 fiscal years that revealed that the government lost Tk 2,628 crore in revenue because of several financial irregularities.
The BTRC chairman, Sunil Kanti Bose, on the next day criticised the CAG’s remark saying the audit objections were awaiting decision of the Public Accounts Committee of parliament.
He said before that PAC meeting it was unfair to say BTRC topped in financial irregularities among government agencies.
‘Our chairman already gave detailed answer to the media about the CAG objection. It is surprising that the
ministry asked for explanation on this ground,’ a BTRC official told New Age on Sunday.
The CAG report said the BTRC in different cases did not fine the illegal voice over internet protocol businesses and failed to collect spectrum charges, licence fees and share transaction fees as per its own rules.
