The prices of rice and edible oil increased in the city’s retail markets over the week ending Friday due to a supply shortage amid a nonstop countrywide blockade being enforced by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, traders said. The prices of BR-28, miniket and najirshail increased by Tk 1 a kilogram in the capital’s retail markets in the week. The prices of coarse varieties of rice, however, remained unchanged.
The fine varieties of BR-28 rice were selling at Tk 43-Tk 46 a kg and the coarse varieties of parija were selling at Tk 38-Tk 41 a kg on Friday.
The fine varieties of miniket rice were selling at Tk 48-Tk 52 a kg while the coarse varieties of miniket were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 46 a kg.
The fine varieties of najirshail were selling at Tk 55-Tk 58 a kg and the coarse varieties were retailing at Tk 44-Tk 50 a kg on the day.
The coarse varieties of rice were retailing at Tk 30-Tk 32 a kg over the week.
Habibur Rahman, a retailer at the Rampura kitchen market, told New Age that the wholesale prices of rice increased by Tk 0.50 a kg due to the ongoing blockade.
He said that the supply chain had been disrupted due to political unrest and transport owners increased their charges due to fear of vandalism and arson.
Zakir Hossain, a retailer at the Karwan Bazar kitchen market, said that the prices of unpacked soya bean oil increased by Tk 5 a litre and super plum oil by Tk 2 a litre due to a supply shortage.
Unpacked soya bean oil was being retailed by Tk 95-Tk 98 a litre while super plum oil was selling at Tk 74-Tk 76 a litre on Friday.
The prices of bottled soya bean oil remained unchanged and it was selling at Tk 500 a five-litre container in the city’s kitchen markets.
The prices of vegetables and fish remained high.
Cauliflower and cabbage were retailing at Tk 25 a piece and Tk 20 a piece respectively, aubergine was selling at Tk 40-Tk 60 a kg, tomato at Tk 40-Tk 50 a kg, cucumber at Tk 40 a kg, okra at Tk 110 a kg and bitter gourd at Tk 50 a kg on the day.
The price of green chilli remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 60 a kg over the week.
Rohita was selling at Tk 200-Tk 300 a kg, katla at Tk 200-Tk 280 a kg, pangas at Tk 120-Tk 170 a kg and tilapia at Tk 110-Tk 180 a kg, depending on their size and quality.
Sugar price remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 44-Tk 47 a kg on Friday.
The price of broiler remained high and the item as selling at Tk 145-Tk 155 a kg while mutton was selling at Tk 480-Tk 500 a kg on the day.
Beef price remained unchanged and the item was selling at Tk 300 a kg on Friday.
The price of red lentil imported from Turkey and Canada was selling at Tk 90 a kg on Friday.
The fine variety of red lentil was selling at Tk 120 a kg while its local variety was selling at Tk 115 a kg.
The price of egg increased by Tk 2 a hali (four pieces) and the item was selling at Tk 30 a hali over the week.
The prices of onion and garlic remained unchanged.
Local variety of onion was selling at Tk 35-Tk 40 a kg while the imported one was selling at Tk 40-Tk 45 a kg on the day.
Garlic was retailing at Tk 95-Tk 100 a kg over the week.
