The Eid shopping is getting momentum with the shoppers crowding the city’s different shopping malls for buying dresses of their choice and other necessities on the eve of the Eid ul Fitr, the biggest Muslim festival which is only two weeks away.
Shopkeepers are wooing customers by displaying different categories of men’s, women’s and children’s wear. Buyers and sellers have blamed price hike for dampening their Eid festivity to some erxtent.
The rush of crowd was particularly visible at the Chandni Chawk, Gausia Market, Rapa Plaza, New Market, Mirpur Benarasi Palli, Mouchack Market, Eastern Plaza, Eastern Plus, Motalib Plaza, Basundhara City, Concored Twin Tower, Bangabazar, Baitul Mukaram, and Rajdhani Super Markets in the capital.
Punjabi is on top of the demands for male while saree for female customers as usual for celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr.
The prices of outfits are higher this year compared to the previous year. A piece of saree, which cost Tk 700 to Tk 1000 last year, is now selling between Tk 1200 and Tk 1500.
Traders at the different markets admitted the price hike of some particular sarees and girls three pieces due to import duties. They said there has been a big demand of home made boutiques for their competitive prices.
Traders at different markets said they have imported different types of clothes to meet the growing demand of the customers. But the prices of different wears including sarees and three pieces for women and young girls are slightly higher this year. Both local and imported women’s and girl’s wears are available in those shopping malls.
Sarees with the handiwork, chiffon, multi handi work (Italian craft), green silk, catbarry silk and pashmina are popular with the richer section of people.
On the other hand, some boutique houses and posh outlets like Mantra, Grameen Check, Banglar Mela, Sadakalo, Banglarmela and Nagordola are also selling saree, fatwa, panjabi and three pieces at reasonable prices.
Boutique houses are selling different qualities of three pieces at prices ranging from Tk 500 and Tk 10,000 each and fatwa between Tk 150 and Tk 1500 and panjabi between Tk 1200 and Tk 2500.

Children wears such as jeans pant, anarkali, three- quarter pant, baba set, block tea shirt and frog cost between Tk 250 and Tk 12000 at different markets in the city.
Pir Yameni market at Gulistan, a popular shopping centre for Punjabi and Pajama, was found abuzz with hundreds of customers. The prices of Punjabis were varying from Tk 550 to Tk 1500.
The city’s Benarasi Palli at Mirpur, centre for traditional Benarasi Katan and Jamdani sarees, witnessed an extraordinary rush of customers yesterday. Shoppers especially women and teenage girls mainly thronged the mall.
Expensive sarees decorated with stone chumkies were put on display at the Palli’s showrooms attracting the attention of female shoppers.
The added attraction of the upcoming Eid is Katan fabric made of three pieces. Price of it is ranging from Tk 1000 and Tk 3000. Sales of the new products are remarkable. Besides, Benarasi, Jamdani, Katan, and wedding sarees were also getting good response from the buyers, according to traders. Traders said the craze for cotton, Benarasi, Katan and Jamdani sarees is increasing in the recent times.
