Country’s largest private-sector airline GMG is adding a new aircraft to its fleet today as it is preparing to resume flights on several international routes.
A senior GMG official told New Age on Friday that decline in fuel prices inspired GMG to resume the flights.
On domestic routes GMP presently operates flights from Dhaka to Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet and Jessore and on international routes it connects Dhaka with Kuala Lumpur, Katmandu and Kolkata.
‘We are taking all preparations to resume flights to Bangkok, Delhi and Singapore within the next few weeks,’ ATM Nazrul Islam, director of GMG public relations, said.
Nazrul said exorbitant hikes in fuel prices earlier forced GMG to halt flights to some international destinations but significant declines in fuel costs now inspires them to restart those international operations.
The airliner has arranged a ceremony at Zia International Airport this morning on inception of the aircraft MD-83 with 150 seats, including 134 for economy class and 16 for executive class.
At present GMG is flying two MD-82 aircrafts – one with 152 seats and the other 156 seats. The newly added aircraft has advanced engine and longer flight time capacities, Nazrul said.
He told New Age that they brought the aircraft from a US company under a dry lease agreement and the primary fund for the lease was provided by the Sonali Bank Limited. GMG started operation in 1998.
The airline started its international operations two years back.
