Bangladesh produced 2.51 lakh tonnes of shrimp in the 2020-21 fiscal year, and the country’s export income has increased in recent years despite the global recession and Covid-19 pandemic, according to Fisheries Minister SM Rezaul Karim.
He spoke at the InterContinental Dhaka in the capital during the closing ceremony of the USDA-funded Safe Aqua Farming for Economic and Trade Improvement (SAFETI) project.
“I am pleased to learn that the SAFETI project, which was implemented by Winrock International with USDA funding, has successfully disseminated improved farming practices among small-scale shrimp and prawn farmers in ten upazilas of Khulna Division,” said the minister.
The districts involved in the project’s implementation were Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Jashore, and Cox’s Bazar.
25,000 farmers have increased their farmed prawn production and income as a result of this project.
