A seven-day annual art exhibition featuring artworks by students of the sculpture department of Dhaka University began at Zainul Gallery of the university on Monday.
Organised by the sculpture department of the faculty of fine art, the exhibition features 64 artworks created by students of 2022 and 2023 academic years.
The event was inaugurated by Dhaka University vice-chancellor professor Niaz Ahmed Khan.
The students displayed 48 sculptures created by using mediums such as, iron, wood, bronze, bricks, paper, jute, terracotta, soap, clay, plaster of paris, scrap metal, aluminium and plane sheets along with 16 drawings.
The opening ceremony was held at the Osman Jamal Auditorium of the FFA where five students received awards in different categories.
Lala Rukh Selim delivered a welcome speech at the event while Dhaka University treasurer professor M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and the faculty dean, Md Azharul Islam Sheikh, attended it as special guests.
A A M Kaoser Hassan, a teacher of the department, briefed the audience about the exhibition while Nasimul Khabir, the chairman of the department, presided over the event.
The FFA is an important discipline of the university as it shows tangible outputs of education, said the VC, adding, ‘The exhibition is showcasing artworks created for the university and society. This exhibition should be treated as a success.’
This exhibition is important for student artists to show their artworks and receive feedback from art critics, audiences and the community, Azharul said, adding,
‘The annual exhibition is also interesting and challenging because the students come with diverse independent ideas with a huge amount of labour pouring into the sculptures.’
Anika Tabassum Nujhat, Sumit Roy, Riya Das, Supriya Kumar Ghosh and Sumaiya Tushi received awards from the guests at the event.
The exhibition will conclude on November 17.
