A diverse world of images

International Inter University Photography Exhibition by NSUPC
North South University Photography Club (NSUPC) was founded in 1997 by a few photography enthusiasts. Gradually it has become one of the most prominent promoters of photography in Bangladesh. In 2003, NSUPC started to invite university students from other countries to participate at its International Inter University Photography Exhibition. At present, NSUPC is holding the exhibition at the National Art Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Drik Gallery in Dhaka. The exhibition began on July 4 and will continue till July 10.
At this year’s exhibition, the photographs are categorised under colour and, black and white media, which have been classified into eight sub-categories — action, architecture, landscape, nature, life, portrait, still life and photo story.
Sowrav Das’ black and white images focus on labourers carrying sand. He took the snaps at Gabtoli, by the Turag river. These workers come from different parts of the country. They are committed, united and disciplined. His series is titled “Chain of Bond.” It seems that there is a bond among them. Their freedom is to be found within this disciplined chain of bondage.
Nazia Sultana Shoronee is a student of BUET. As a photographer, she likes landscapes. She has tried to articulate the beauty of Bangladesh and its special character in various ways.
Zahid Kawser has observed the nature of Bangladesh with great love and passion. He notices the characteristic waves in the green paddy fields and the rivers. Rich and ever changing formation of clouds during the monsoons captivate him.
Habiba Nowrose is a student of Dhaka University. She received several awards for her commendable works. At the exhibition, the subject of her work is quite simple — a middle-aged woman seated by a door. Light falls on her face and reveals her contemplative mood in a silent environment.
Armin Hari is an Indonesian photographer. A boy playing with a wheel is seen in Hari’s photograph. This is a very common subject for amateur photographers. The atmosphere looks quiet, which seems to be the main aspect of this photograph.
Raian Sadman Hayat is a student of American International University Bangladesh. He documents a large paddy field where a man crosses a narrow path. Green is the predominant aspect of the image where a clear sky is also visible.
Imran Hasan’s images show the hilly areas. He concentrates on lush greenery and the lifestyle of the indigenous community. In his works, the blue sky becomes more intimate with the land. The pictures also tell stories of survival, struggle, hope and triumph of the community.
Khan Mohammed Irteza’s black and white image is a portrait of a depressed man. The man is sitting in a cot beside a window. Light coming through the window is inadequate.
