Average monthly earning of a rickshaw puller is Tk 11,517 while a three-wheeler driver earns Tk 35,915 a month, according to a survey report of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics. A battery-run easy bike consumes electricity worth Tk 2,600 a month, the report said.
The BBS on Tuesday released the report titled ‘the case studies on selected economic activities’ at a programme at its headquarters in Dhaka.
The survey conducted in 2013 covering the rickshaw and van, easy bike and three-wheeler, money exchange, fisheries and irrigation, and cooperative sectors.
According to the findings, a rickshaw puller earns Tk 446 a day and work on an average 26 day a month. After paying the rent to rickshaw owner, the net income remains at Tk 368.
After deducting the rent, the income of a rickshaw puller stands at Tk 384 in urban areas while Tk 331 in rural areas.
A rickshaw puller plies on an average 42km per shift a day. Around 66 per cent of rickshaw puller ply rickshaw only at a single shift.
The average earnings of rickshaw and van pullers are Tk 500 a day and Tk 12,620 a month, it said.
Only 41.10 per cent of rickshaw pullers have their own vehicle and the remaining pull rickshaw on rent while 72.4 per cent van pullers have personal van, according to the report.
Around 15 lakh people are in the profession and the number of rickshaws has been increasing over the years.
In 2003, there were 10 lakh rickshaws in the country which stood at 11 lakh in 2012.
A battery-run easy bike driver earns Tk 30,411 a month while that of a three-wheeler earns Tk 35,915 plying their vehicles on an average 26 days in a month, it showed.
As of 2012, there are a total of 1,52,600 easy bikes and 1.35 lakh three-wheelers in the country.
In urban areas, a three-wheeler driver earns Tk 1,435 which is Tk 1,380 in rural areas.
The income of an easy bike driver is Tk 1,180 in urban areas and Tk 1,129 in rural areas, the report showed.
Statistics and Informatics Division secretary Suraiya Begum and BSS director general GM Kamal, among others, were present at the programme.f
