Tamim handed huge fine, banned for a match
The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Wednesday declared the halted Dhaka Premier League match between Abahani Limited and Prime Doleshwar abandoned, splitting the points between two teams.
The decision paved the way for Abahani Limited to regain the title of the league as it took their tally to 23 points from 16 matches, two points clear of Doleshwar, who ended as runners-up.
Both Abahani and Doleshwar won their respective final round match on Wednesday meaning that Abahani could not be declared champions until a ruling over the halted match.
Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan hold a press conference after the Abahani match at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, but was unable to give any clear decision.
Nazmul said that a special committee that was formed to investigate the match recommended spiting points between the two teams but he was personally in favour of a re-match.
The BCB later accepted the recommendation of the special committee as the rematch effectively would have no bearing on the title race. Abahani improved their run rate significantly by beating Prime Bank with a 115-run margin, meaning Prime Doleshwar had virtually no chance to overtake them even if there was a rematch.
They had to win the rematch by an unthinkable margin, something the club did not consider realistic.
‘We have no choice but to accept the decision of BCB,’ Doleshwar coach Mizanur Rahman told New Age.
BCB president Nazmul said the special committee submitted their report to him in the morning but he still wanted a rematch to give everyone a fair chance.
‘I did not want the league to finish this way. But at the same time I had to consider the report of our special committee. They gave a recommendation based on the bylaws of the league,’ he said.
The BCB finally accepted all recommendations of the special committee and fined Abahani captain Tamim Iqbal Tk one lakh for hurling abusive words towards umpires during the halted match at BKSP.
Tamim was also handed one–match ban, which will be effective in the next tournament organised by the BCB. The Board also fined Doleshwar’s icon cricketer Nasir Hossain Tk 20,000 for his part during the match.
Special committee member Nazmul Karim Tinku said they also recommend punishment for umpires, Gazi Sohel and Tanvir Ahmed and match referee Montu Datta, who could not handle the situation properly.
‘We asked the umpires committee to take necessary steps against them,’ said Tinku. ‘They failed to handle the act properly during the match.’
It should be mentioned that Abahani captain Tamim reacted furiously after umpires turned down their stumping appeal against Doleshwar’s Roquibul Hassan. Eight balls later both umpires Sohel and Tanvir left the field in face of verbal abuse by Abahni players.
Tamim, who already apologised through his official Facebook page, accepted his punishment.
‘I have accepted whatever the punishment was given to me,’ said Tamim. ‘I think I have made a mistake and if I was punished for that I would accept it happily. I should not only accept the punishment, rather I should take a lesson from it.
‘I have said earlier many young boys follow me or like my game. Before everything I need to be a good human being. The mistake that I have made, if I can avoid it I will be known as a good person and good cricketer,’ said Tamim.
