A two-day commemoration programme marking the 113th birth anniversary of legendary singer Abbasuddin Ahmed was held in Kolkata on October 26 and 27. The programme was jointly organised by the office of Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Kolkata and Abbasuddin Swaran Samity. Professor Nashid Kamal, granddaughter of Abbasuddin and a versatile singer herself, attended the programme. Nashid Kamal entertained the audience on both the days with her grandfather’s songs.
On the first day she sang numbers like Oi Madhobi Bonete Bondhu Chilo, Oki Gariyal Bhai, and O Dheu khele Re. On the second day she sang pieces like Kisher More Raandhon, Oki O Bondhu Kajol Bhromora , Prano Shokhi Re and Oi Dekh Ghur Ghur Ghur Koriya. Moreover, the singer shared anecdotes about Abbasuddin in between her songs.
Her co-artiste from Bangladesh was well known and skilful bhawaiya singer Bhupati Barman (of Kurigram). He sang some famous bhawaiyya numbers like Phande Poriya, Baokunta Batash Jemon, O More Chando Re’ and won the hearts of the audience.
Dr Sukhvilas Barma, MLA of Jalpaiguri, also presented some bhawaiya songs on both days, so did music troupe Madol, singer Shumitra Barma and Siddheswar Barma from Dhupguri, Parvin Sultana and few other baul artistes.
The performances received good reception from a great number of Kolkata audiences who attended the programme.
