Legendary folk musicians late Abdul Alim and late Abdul Latif were remembered at a commemorative programme at the Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Monday.
The programme comprised of discussion on the lives and achievements of the two singers-musicians and presentation of their songs. Liaquat Ali Lucky, director general of the academy, presided over the discussion session in which seasoned folk artistes Indramahon Rajbanshi and Nadira Begum participated.
The speakers observed that the way the two music maestros popularised folk music in the country is unparallel. They also mentioned that Abdul Alim and Abdul Latif literally devoted their lives to performing, promoting and spreading folk music.
The discussion session was followed by solo presentation of some popular folk numbers by noted singers of the country. Abu Bakar Siddique, in his powerful voice, presented Abdul Alim’s famous songs- Holudia Pakhi Sonali Boron and Prem-er Mora Joley Dubey Na.
Singer Biman Chandra Biswas, on the other hand, presented Tomare Chhariya Bondhu Jaimu Na Bedeshe and Porer Jaiga Porer Jomin Ghor Banaiya Ami Roi which were received by the audience with loud applauses.
Spiritual song Mone Boro Asha Chhilo Jabo Modinay was beautifully presented by Afroza Reba, who also rendered Koto Mojar Kissa Kotha.
Singer Sheikha Hemayet, Azgar Alim, Abdul Karim Khan and Anima Mukti Gomes also presented some timeless folk songs at the programme to pay tribute to the two great folk musicians. They rendered Ar Kotokal Bhasbo Ami, Ujan Desher Manjhi, Bina Doshe Pran Bondhu Giyachhe Chhariya Re, Jaake Chhere Gelam and a few others in solo presentations. A packed hall enjoyed the songs and celebrated folk music.
