Academic activities at the newly established Rangpur University have been stopped following issuance of a government circular.
The ministry of education on January 14 issued a circular, suspending recruitment of teachers and employees at all public universities of the country.
Earlier, Rangpur University authorities had announced to start classes in six departments under three units from January 28. Admission test were held under the three units on November 30 last year.
About 19,000 admission seekers vied for 300 seats in six departments— Bangla, English, Economics, Business Administration, Mathematics and Computer Science and Engineering. The university authorities also completed all admission formalities.
Academic activities of the university were supposed to begin temporarily at Rangpur Teachers’ Training College (TTC). Advertisements were also published in national dailies for recruitment of teachers and employees, but the process came to a halt due to the official circular.
Fulfilling the long-felt demand of the people of Rangpur, former caretaker government in its cabinet meeting in February last year decided to set up a university in Rangpur and promulgated necessary laws in this regard.
It (caretaker government) acquired 75 acres of land of Rangpur Carmichael College for the purpose and appointed Prof Dr Lutfur Rahman of Dhaka University as vice chancellor of the university.
Rangpur University Implementation Coordinating Commitee urged the government to withdraw the order so that the newly established university can start its functioning.
Rangpur University Implementation Coordinating Commitee Covener Dr Muhammad Rezaul Haq said the official circular will keep less impact on other universities of the country.
