An Army staff threw acid on two sisters and their mother on refusal of marriage proposal in Gaibandha on Monday night.
The victims are Rehena Akhter, 22, a student of Dhaka Northern International Medical College, her sister Ruma Akhter, 14, and their mother Rezia Siddique, 40, of village Protap under Sadullapur upazila.
They were admitted in the burn unit of Rangpur Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.
Police and locals said, sainik Shamsul Alam (Cop No-1447117), of Engineering Construction Battalion unit of Chittagong cantonment, often proposed to Rehena Akhter, to marry him but she and her family kept declining.
On Monday night, Samsul, with two accomplices, threw acid on the victims through the window of the bedroom while the mother and daughters were asleep.
Locals rushed to the spot hearing the victims screaming. They caught Shamsul Alam and handed him over to police. The accomplices, however, fled.
Later, police handed over the arrested Army staff to Rangpur cantonment.
Shamsul Alam came to Gaibandha on Eid vacation.
Rokonuzzaman Rana, elder brother of Rehana, filed a case with Sadullapur Police Station accusing three persons in this connection.
