Oliul Haq Rumi is a regular performer of Theatre (Baily Road), working with the group since 1993. He has acted in the plays — “Payer Awaaj Pawa Jae”, “Ekhono Kritodash”, “Spordha”, “Meraj Fokirer Ma” and “Golap Bagan”. He played two characters in the production “Meraj Fokirer Ma”. Before joining Theatre (Baily Road), he was a student of the second batch of the Theatre School. During that time, he met Ramendu Majumdar, who in turn introduced Rumi to his mentor Abdullah Al Mamun.
The busy performer is still a regular on the stage, often travelling abroad with his group. Rumi says he had the opportunity of performing in “Spordha” and “Meraj Fokirer Ma” at Kolkata’s Madhusudhan Stage — both receiving much acclaim. The talented performer is also frequent on the TV screen. His first acting experience for TV was in the serial “Kanoner Phool”. Since then he has performed consistently, with his tally of one-hour-dramas in the hundreds and over fifty serials done so far.
Rumi captured the limelight by portraying a CBA leader in the popular serial “Shirsho-bindu”, a performance he describes as “challenging”. He went on to perform in Abdullah Al Mamun’s serial “Jibon Chhobi”. Rumi also acted in the final directorial project by Abdullah Al Mamun. On the great theatre personality, Rumi says all he had learned on the stage from his mentor has made him the actor he is today. Giving wholehearted credit to Abdullah Al Mamun, Rumi says all his achievements were made possible by his mentor’s teachings.
Currently several TV channels are airing serials featuring Rumi. Maasranga TV is airing “Saat Sawdagar”; Channel 9 is airing “Dead End”; ATN Bangla, “Palabar Poth Nei”; Boishkahi, “Ishtikutum” and Channel i is airing “Munnujan”. The actor says he has played widely different characters in the respective serials, all unique in their own regard. He adds that he received the most acclaim for his performance in “Saat Sawdagar”.
Rumi is a regular performer in Hanif Sangket’s “Ittadi”, since 1996. Terming it a “special achievement”, Rumi says he has established a unique bond with “Ittadi” and Hanif Sangket. The busy actor is currently working on several serials, “’Meyetir Thhikana Keu Janey Na” by Shokal Ahmed; “Telesmati’” by Mohiuddin Masud and “Otikrom” by Syed Shakil. He is also set to leave for Qatar to work in Mahfuz Ahmed’s “Mago Tomar Jonno”.
Asked about the turning point in his career, Rumi says Mahfuz Ahmed’s serials — “Choita Pagol” and “Tomar Doa-e Bhalo Achhi Ma” — have been the biggest turnarounds for his career. He adds that the audience response following “Choita Pagol” was an unforgettable experience. He further adds that his notable works include Mir Sabbir’s “Barisal Bonam Noakhali” and “Roshnai” by Zahid Hasan. Rumi says he wants to continue acting in the future, performing in unique roles, which never fail to challenge his limits.
