Mobile phone operator Airtel on Wednesday launched 3G service on test-run basis in its Gulshan and Banani offices for the customers to experience the performance of the service.
Posts and telecommunications minister Sahara Khatun launched the service at Airtel’s Banani office on the day. Later she used the video call service of Airtel to test the service.
Airtel is scheduled to launch the 3G service on commercial basis in some selected areas of Dhaka and Chittagong in October.
The company will launch 3G service in Sylhet in November and will cover seven divisional headquarters by the end of January 2014.
‘We are focusing on use of this latest technology on health, education and agriculture sectors to improve the connection between the urban areas and rural areas,’ said Airtel’s chief executive officer Chris Tobit.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chairman Sunil Kanti Bose and telecom secretary Md Abubaker Siddiqi was present on the occasion, among others.
