Ajit Roy was also an accomplished Tagore singer.
Abbhudoy Sangeet Academy, a music institute founded by Roy, arranged a programme comprising a discussion and cultural presentation on Saturday at Music and Dance Centre of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy to celebrate Ajit Roy’s birth anniversary.
Dr Ranjit Kumar Biswas was present at the programme as , chief guest. Singer Timir Nandi, Shamshul Alam and Rokaiya Hasina recounted their memories with Ajit Roy.
On the occasion, singer Rokayia Hasina was declared the new director of Abbhudoy Sangeet Academy.
In the cultural segment, a few noted and young singers presented songs composed by Ajit Roy. They also presented a few Tagore songs, which the Tagore enthusiast Roy used to render with his signature style.
Singers rendered Roy’s patriotic numbers like Bangladesher nodi math, Ei to e desh mayer moto, Ami tomarei dekhi, Aji Saptosagor uthe uchchhaliya.
In addition to Roy’s composed numbers, noted singer Timir Nandi paid his tribute to Roy by singing a famous old-Bangla song Tomar Somadhi phule phule dhaka.
Fahim Hossain Chowdhury presented Tagore’s Poob hawate dei dola, an all-time favourite of Roy.
Mohadebh Ghosh presented Aguner poroshmoni chhoyao prane, and Bulbul Moholnabish sang Nazrul’s Bagichay bulbuli tui.
Members of Abbhudoy Sangeet Academy presented in chorus Akash bhora surjo tara and Ay re ay re sobai. Dance Troupe Nrityangon presented a recital synchronised with Nazrul’s Dhumketu, which was composed by Ajit Roy.
Ajit Roy was born on June 29, 1938 and died on September 04, 2011. Ajit Roy was one of the most prominent composers of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during the war of independence in 1971. He was a prolific singer, composer and music teacher. He received the Independence Day Award, the highest national accolade in 2000.
