The Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP’s) standing committee member, Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, has described the government as “illegal”, saying that no opposition party exists in the 10th Parliament, if one considers the Constitution’s guidelines. “According to the country’s charter, the existence of an opposition party in Parliament is a must, but that has been scrapped in the 10th Parliament only for forcibly restoring the one-party BKSAL rule,” Mosharraf Hossain alleged.
The government has dishonoured its democratic accountability, even killed it, by holding the whole country hostage, in a bid to hang on to power through illegal means, he added.
Claiming that the party’s previous anti-government campaign has been successful, Mosharraf told the rank and file of the party to be reorganised with the spirit of the party’s founder, Shaheed president Ziaur Rahman, so that the government’s “evil design” is not realised.
Mosharraf Hossain was addressing a discussion meeting marking the 78th birth anniversary of the party founder, Shaheed president Ziaur Rahman, at the National Press Club on Saturday.
At least 95 per cent of the people refrained from participating in the January 5 poll. The Awami League government has appeared anew as an illegal structure, as it has already been rejected at home and abroad, he said.
Describing the 10th Parliament as a black chapter in the country’s history, Mosharraf Hossain said the people never saw such a “farcical and stage-managed election” in the country earlier.
“No election was held on January 5. Parliamentary constituencies have been divided only among the Awami League and leaders of its alliance partners,” he claimed.
The Awami League is afraid of the family members of Shaheed president Ziaur Rahman and, so, it is still carrying out repression on them to eliminate their politics from the country, he said.
The ruling Awami League carried out genocide and introduced one-party BKSAL rule, destroying democracy, after the country’s Independence in 1971, he alleged.
He added that Ziaur Rahman was the sentinel of democracy and sovereignty, who introduced multi-party democracy in the country.
Taking part in the discussion, the BNP’s standing committee member said, “We are being victimised by the one-party democracy as the Treasury benches and the Opposition party in Parliament have become one and the same.”
