Noted singer Alim Mahmud’s solo music album was released at a programme at the Music and Dance Centre Auditorium of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy on Friday. The album titled Charjagan features songs from
the ancient collection of poems titled Charyapada.
The programme was organised by Swapnadal, a cultural organisation and also a popular theatre troupe.The Charyapada is a collection of mystical poems in the Vajrayana tradition of Buddhism. It was written in pre-modern Bengali, Assamese, Maithili and Oriya during the 8th-12th centuries, and it is said to be the oldest collection of verses written in these languages. The original palm-leaf manuscript of the Charyapada was discovered in 1907 by Haraprasad Shastri at the Nepal Royal Court Library.
Singer Alim Mahmud has composed and presented 47 poems of Charyapada in his album titled Charjagan.
The programme was attended by professor emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman as chief guest along with Dr Ranajit Kumar Biswas, secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs; and Afsar Ahmed, professor of Theatre Studies Department of Jahangirnagar University, who were present as special guests.
‘I have transformed different poems from Charyapada into songs,’ said Alim Mahmud to New Age about that album. ‘The songs are in an ancient form of Bengali language; therefore it might be difficult for modern audience to understand the lyrics,’ also said Mahmud.
The album launching ceremony was followed by chorus presentations of few of the songs from the album. Alim Mahmud, accompanied by other the artistes of his troupe Shohojia rendered the songs.
