A traditional pala based experimental theatre production Amina Sundori was staged by Theatre Art Unit on the second day of Nattyateertha’s theatre festival Ponchadosher Ponchadin on Friday at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Through the simple narrative of a woman named Amina, the play features the fact that women have no respect in the male dominated society. Their love and emotion are also ignored and sometimes they are deceived by their nears and dears.
The production, based on a 300 year old folklore of the Chittagong region titled Nachhar Malum and Bhelua Shundari, had been adapted by the late playwright-director SM Sulaiman.
Rokeya Rafiq Baby has reproduced the play.
As done in the traditional pala, the actors and musicians took position in a line on the backstage and enacted different characters of the play, which depicts an abandoned wife Amina’s longing for her husband for over eight years.
Amina Sundori begins counting days for her husband Nachhar’s arrival from Burma (Myanmar).
Without informing Amina, Nachhar, in fact, marries a Burmese woman named Ekhin. The play reaches its climax when Amina , by fate, comes to meet Nachhar at Bhola Sawdagar’s house. Seeing her in the merchant’s house, Nachchar rather questions Amina’s chastity.
Three actors of the troupe- Anika Mahin, Sadia Safa and Fauzia Karim Anu-performed in the role of Amina.
‘The troupe presented the pala impressively and accurately,’ observed noted director Ataur Rahman who was present at the show.
Another audience Samiul Haque said, ‘It was an interesting presentation, I enjoyed it,’.
Before the show, Aranyak
Natydal presented a number of songs at the lobby of the National Theatre Hall.
