It looks like Aminul Islam Bulbul, the current president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and vice-president Nazmul Abedeen Fahim are on track to be elected without any opposition in the upcoming board of directors’ election. This comes after the Election Commission rejected three nomination papers on Monday.
On Monday, the Election Commission announced that the nomination papers for SM Abdullah Al Fuad Redwan, who is representing the Jamalpur District Sports Council from Dhaka Division; Showkat Hossain, from the Chandpur District Sports Council in Chattogram; and Hasibul Alam, from the Rajshahi Divisional Sports Council, have all been deemed invalid.
As Fuad’s nomination has been disqualified, Aminul and Fahim now have no competitors from Dhaka Division, where two directors will be elected.
Barisal, Sylhet, and Khulna will also see directors come through unopposed.
Former national team left-arm spinner and selector Abdur Razzak and Zulfiqar Ali Khan from Khulna, Rahat Shams from Sylhet, and Shakhawat Hossain from Barishal will emerge from their respective divisions if everything goes accordingly.
It was learnt that these outcomes strengthen Aminul’s path to be re-elected as the BCB president.
For Fuad and Hasibul, the signatures given by the supporters in the councillor’s form and nomination form didn’t match.
In Showkat’s case, the election commission found that the signatures of the nominator didn’t match.
However, Fuad publicly protested the decision and stated that he would lodge an appeal against the rejection.
He even contacted his supporting councillor by phone in the presence of awaiting media to verify the signature.
After receiving confirmation from the councillor, Fuad said he would file an appeal against the rejection on Tuesday.
However, Categories 2 and 3 had no nomination papers rejected. Category 2, which will have 12 directors on the board, has 30 nominations, whereas three candidates will compete for the sole position in Category 3.
Sheikh Jobaed Hossain, the chief returning officer, stated that the candidates could appeal against their rejections between 10:00am and 1:00pm today, while the hearings are scheduled between 2:00pm and 5:00pm.
According to the schedule, any nomination can be withdrawn on October 1 from 10:00am to 12:00pm, while the final list will be published at 2:00pm.
