Batsmen named in 15-man squad for Kolkata tournament
Batsmen Anamul Haque and Nasir Hossain have been effectively dropped from the Bangladesh squad for the first Test against Zimbabwe when they were selected for the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI for a tournament in Kolkata later this month. The BCB announced a 15-member squad for the Acharya Memorial Trophy 2014, a one-day tournament which coincided with the first Test in Dhaka.
The tournament, which has been arranged to commemorate 150 years of Eden Gardens stadium, will be held in Kolkata from October 25 to November 1.
The first Test against Zimbabwe will also start at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on October 25.
Anmaul will lead the BCB XI, which also includes Elias Sunny, a member of Bangladesh squad during the recent Test series against West Indies, though he did not play any matches.
Batsman Naeem Islam, Mohammad Mithun and Sabbir Rahman were among others to be included in the Kolkata-bound squad.
‘We mainly considered our options for the one-day series against Zimbabwe,’ said chief selector Faruk Ahmed. ‘This is a one-day tournament and this will give us a very good chance to look at our players.
‘Some of the top domestic teams of India will play in this tournament. So it will be a good practice for our one-day players as well.’
It was speculated that one-day skipper Mashrafee bin Murtaza also had been considered for the tournament, but selector Minhajul Abedin brushed aside the suggestions.
We have five ODIs against Zimbabwe, so we need to keep him fit,’ Minhajul said of Mashrafee. ‘There was no question of picking him for the Kolkata tournament.
