Local shipbuilder Ananda Shipyard & Slipways Ltd yesterday handed over a multi-purpose container ship to its UK buyer.
Ananda, the pioneer in the export of ships from Bangladesh, built the ship with over 6,100 deadweight tons tonnage at its Meghna Ghat Shipyard in Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj.
The ship was manufactured for Britain’s Enzian Shipping Company Ltd, the company said in a statement, after the handover ceremony at InterContinental Dhaka in the capital.
‘Ship export is a great success for us’, Minister of State for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury said at the event.
The ship will be able to transport heavy steel coils, food grains, timber and containers, according to the statement.
In addition, the ship will typically navigate the Baltic Sea, a hostile sea where ships are sometimes completely covered by ice and has ice water four feet high.
At the event, Ananda Shipyard Chairman Abdullahel Bari said that the shipyard has been building ships of international standard at Meghnaghat in Sonargaon for more than 30 years. The shipyard has built 356 ships for local and international buyers.
The country has at least 10 shipyards capable of building and exporting modern ships.
