Bangladesh Ansar and VDP suspended their women’s kabaddi team after an incident in the eighth Bangladesh Games put their reputation at stake after several players and officials
were punished by the Bangladesh Kabaddi Federation.
The federation last week fined Ansar Tk 1 lakh, suspended four officials – Abdul Aziz, Noor-e-Alam, commander Sajal and Saifuddin – for two years and Kochi Rani Mondol for one year for beating the match officials mercilessly after their loss to BJMC in the women’s kabaddi final.
Ansar high-ups took the incident seriously and launched a disciplinary inquiry before finally suspending the activities of team this week.
Major General Nazim Uddin, the director general of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, hinted that once the disciplinary inquiry is completed they might completely scrap the team.
‘We are planning to scrap the kabaddi team and after the initial inquiry we decided to suspend the women’s kabaddi team for an indefinite period,’ Nazim Uddin told reporters on Friday.
‘Ansar is a disciplined force and our job is to ensure the law and order of the country but this occurrence brought shame on us, so we took this type of decision,’ he said.
‘The services teams like us are participating in sports only for recreation. Our goal is not to win the Olympic medal. So we suspended the women’s team,’ he added.
Nazrul Islam, general secretary of the kabaddi federation, also confirmed Ansar’s decision.
‘We received a letter from Bangladesh Ansar informing us about their decision. It is a very unfortunate news for kabaddi,’ Nazrul said.
Shahnaz Parvin Maleka, captain of the Bangladesh Ansar women’s team, was disappointed at the decision.
‘We earned a lot of medals and crowns for Bangladesh as a player of Ansar. We got all kinds of facilities from Ansar. This kind of decision puts us in an uncertain situation,’ said Maleka.
‘We were not guilty for what happened after the match. It all happened between the spectators and the federation officials. So why should the players be the sufferers?’ she asked.
‘We hope that Bangladesh Ansar will change their decision,’ added Maleka. It may be mentioned that Ansar have no men’s team in kabaddi, which means they are now effectively out of the sport.
