Popular classical music singer Anup Barua entertained the audience presenting evergreen Manna Dey’s songs in a commemorative programme organised by Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in memory of the recently demised legendary singer of India.
A popular classical and semi-classical singer Barua gave a soulful presentation of Dey’s 18 songs at the programme that continued for over two hours.
The audience got the real flavour of Manna Dey’s raga based Bangla adhunik gaan (modern song) in Barua’s voice that reflects a unique blend of depth and resonance.
Truly his velvety voice that effortlessly flows between highs and lows of the octave created a perfect ambience required for the timeless numbers such as Dwip chhilo shikha chhilo. Jadi kagojey likho naam, Sabaito sukhi hotey chay, Katodin dekhini tomay and Sundori gow dohai tomar.
Barua appeared equally skillful while rendering Manna Dey’s evergreen playbacks for the Bollywood films such as Laaga chunari main daag, Puchhona kaisey mene and Aye meri zohra jabeen.
The show began with presentation of Manna Dey’s raga based inspirational number Jwalao aakash pradip.
The houseful audience started singing with Anup Barua as the singer rendered Manna Dey’s epoch making number Coffee house-r sei adda ta.
The audience also enjoyed Dey’s numbers in fast tempo like Ei kule ami aar oi, Se amar chhoto bon and others.
Barua could make a melancholic ambiance while rendering sentimental numbers such as Jani tomar premer jogna ami toh noi, Ami phul na hoye, Khub jantey icchey korey and Abar hobey toh dekha.
The show ended with presentation of Na na jeo na o sesh pata gow with the urge to keep someone special in the memory forever.
Legendary singer Manna Dey died on 24 October in Bangalore, India at the age of 94. Manna Dey’s demise has left all music fans teary-eyed. But his melodies will remain forever.
