Top flight outfit Team BJMC will leave Dhaka today to participate in the King’s Cup in Bhutan where they are placed in Group B alongside Three Star Club of Nepal,
United Sikkim FC of India and local side Thimphu City.
Another Bangladeshi side Arambagh Krira Sangha will play against renowned Indian club Mohan Bagan FC, Nepal’s NMB Machindra FC, LHM Manang Club and Yeedzin FC of Bhutan in Group A.
BJMC, who finished fourth in the Bangladesh Premier League last season, have initially targeted a place in the last four of the King’s Cup. This is the first time BJMC will send its football side abroad to feature in an international tournament.
‘We will go there not only to represent BJMC but also to represent our country and our flag,’ said Arif Khan Joy, director of BJMC, on Thursday at a press conference at the BFF House.
Amit Khan Shuvra, captain of BJMC, also expressed his desire of reaching the semi-finals.
‘Initially our goal is to ensure the semi-final spot, then we will think about the final,’ he said.
BJMC went through 12 days of preparation ahead of the tournament and head coach Zakaria Babu, who was unable to train his side due to illness, will not travel to Bhutan. In his absence, Wazed Gazi, the team’s technical adviser, will guide the team.
BJMC will start their King’s Cup campaign on July 23 against host club Thimphu City FC while Arambagh will face hosts Yeedzin FC on the inaugural day of the tournament on Saturday.
Nine teams split into two groups will take part in the tournament and the top two teams from each group will go through to the semi-finals.
The final match is scheduled to take place on August 10. All the matches will be held at the Changlimithang Stadium.
