Director, Military Operations, Brig Gen ATM Ziaul Hasan yesterday said no innocent person would be arrested during the ongoing Operation Rebel Hunt.
“Operation Rebel Hunt is a self-explanatory term. It means to find out those who have mutinied. So, we will not arrest randomly,” he said while briefing journalists at the Army Headquarters. The arrests will be made after verifying available information and necessary assessment, Ziaul Hasan said. He said the forces are providing security to BDR members who have joined the service voluntarily and are working to restore discipline.
“Those BDR members who reported to the Headquarters are undergoing medical tests,” he said.
The Director said the army so far recovered 47 rifles, 18 pistols, 11 light machine guns and 50,000 rounds of bullets from BDR Headquarters. Besides, fifteen grenades were still lying at various places those will be exploded, he said.
According to him, five Army officers still remained missing. They are Col Gulzar, Lt Col Manjur Elahi, Maj Abu Syeed Gazzali, Maj Azizul Hakim and Capt Tanvir Haider. Besides, three bodies, yet to be identified, are in CMH awaiting DNA tests.
“After DNA test, we will be able to let you know as to whether the bodies were of the missing army officers,” he said.
He said the investigators collected blood-stained evidences, records of conversation on mobile phones and SIMs, and duty roster of the day of carnage inside the BDR headquarters to track down
the real offenders.
The army officer said they are also assisting the CID inquiry into a case filed with Lalbagh police station concerning the killings and helping both the government inquiry committee and the army inquiry committee in performing their respective tasks.
Asked whether the report of the army inquiry committee will be made public, Ziaul Hassan said the inquiry is the army’s internal matter.
“It is working under set terms of reference as to who were involved,
why the incident was staged and to make recommendations for stopping recurrence of such incident.”
