The prices of aromatic rice and spices increased on the city’s retail markets on Saturday, two days before the celebration of Eid-ul-Azha. Traders said the prices of the items went up on the market as the wholesalers increased the prices ahead of Eid, which is to be celebrated tomorrow.
The prices of chinigura and kalijira increased by Tk 5 a kg and the items were selling at Tk 85-Tk 90 a kg and Tk 95-Tk 100 a kg respectively
on Saturday.
The packed item of the aromatic rice was selling at Tk 110 on the day.
Azizur Rahman, a retailer at Shantinagar Bazar, told New Age that the prices of aromatic rice increased a bit as the prices at wholesale level went up.
The retailers should not be blamed for the price increase, he said.
‘Wholesalers only can manipulate the market of rice, not the retailers,’ Azizur said.
The prices of spices, which are essential ingredients for cooking Eid feasts, increased further in the capital’s retail markets on Saturday.
The prices of cumin, cloves, cardamom, black pepper and cinnamon increased by Tk 50-Tk 100 a kilogram on the day.
Cumin was selling at Tk 450-Tk 500 a kg, cloves at Tk 1,700-Tk 1,800 a kg, cardamom at Tk 1,800 a kg, black pepper Tk 1,200-Tk 1,300 a kg and cinnamon at Tk 350-Tk 400 a kg on the day.
The prices of onion and garlic remained high.
Both the local and imported garlic was selling at Tk 100 a kg and local onion was retailing at Tk 40-Tk 45 a kg while the imported item was selling at Tk 38 a kg on Saturday.
The prices of cucumber increased by Tk 10 a kg and the item was selling at Tk 50-Tk 60 a kg on the day.
The prices of lemon increased by Tk 15 a hali (four pieces) and the item was selling at Tk 35-Tk 40 a hali while the item was selling at Tk 20-Tk 25 a hali two days back.
