Int’l Day for Indigenous People
Indigenous artistes enthralled a huge audience at a cultural show held at the auditorium of CARITAS regional office in the town on Saturday afternoon.
The event was organised marking the International Day for Indigenous People.
The rendition of indigenous songs and dance sequences with traditional songs entertained the packed hall.
Organisations working for indigenous people in Mymensingh including Tribal Welfare Association, Bangladesh Garo and Hajong Chhatra Sangathan and CARITAS undertook an elaborate day long programme to mark the day.
Hundreds of indigenous people from Mymensingh region attended the programme dressed with traditional clothes.
President of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad Ferdous Ara Mahmuda Helen, Suvash Jengsam, Robert Mankin, Professor Remond Areng, Maria Chiran, Grener Marak, Professor Bhaskar Sengupta and regional director of CARITAS Theofil Nokrek addressed the discussion, among others marking the day.
President of celebration committee Tushar Daring presided over the event. Mrinal Kanti Sangma and Jui Mree presented the programme.
The speakers said, according to the ILO Convention, indigenous cultural heritage should be preserved for cultural diversity of the country. The government should take initiatives towards this end, they added.
They also urged indigenous people, especially the younger generation, to preserve their unique culture and traditions.
Several stalls with indigenous attire and other articles were set up at the CARITAS premises that drew a large crowd.
