Asif Hossain Khan and Abdulla Hel Baki won bronze in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event of the Commonwealth Games at the Dr K Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Asif Hossain scored 590 (99+100+98+97+98+98) while Abdullah Hel Baki scored 583 (95+97+99+ 98+96+ 98) to total 1,173 that presented Bangladesh the first medal from the Games participated by 71 countries. Baki was below-par than his normal form and just a few more points would have seen Bangladesh win silver ahead of England.
World record holder Gagan Narang shot a spectacular sequence of 99, 100, 100, 99, 100, 100 to total a grand 598, while Beijing Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra’s series read 100, 98 ,99, 100, 99, 99 for a total of 595 to provide hosts India the first gold medal of the Games.
James Huckle of England shot 100, 98, 100, 98, 96, 97=589 and Kenny Parr shot 99, 99, 97, 96, 97, 97=585 taking England’s total to 1,174, just one point more than Bangladesh, to clinch the silver.
‘I tried my best and the outcome I think is good, Baki is relatively inexperienced, so we can’t blame him,’ said Asif who will fight in the individual event of 10m Air Rifle today.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh duo Sabrina Sultana and Sharmin Shilpa finished last among the eight participants in the women’s 50m Rifle Three Positions scoring 1,114. Singaporean duo of Wei Jasmine and Sudhir Aqilah scored 1,149 to grab the gold medal.
Bangladesh boxer Abdur Rahim lost to Yves Ulysse in the Welterweight bout (64kg) by 6-1 points in the lone event for Bangladesh boxers.
Bangladesh archers Emdadul Haque Milon and Sheikh Sajib sealed their quarter-final slots in the men’s Individual Recurve Bow event. Milon scored 651, the second highest among the eight quarter-finalists, while Sajib totalled 641. Abdul Rahim Muhammad Izzuddin of Malaysia topped the list with 660 points.
Two Bangladesh squash players, Masud Rana and Swapan Parvez, both lost their games of the men’s Singles Round of 32 in the Plate section to their Ugandan opponents. Masud Rana lost 3-2 to Kyagulanyi Samuel while Swapan was defeated 3-1 by Kawooya Michael.
