Former lawmaker Hemayet Ullah Auranga and five others were killed in a traffic accident at Lauhajang in Munshiganj on Dhaka-Mawa Highway on Saturday.
The accident took place near Medenipur Khanbari around 3:45pm, said Lauhajang police officer-in-charge Zakiur Rahman. Auranga was heading for Shariatpur with a Prado jeep as it collided head on with a Dhaka-bound bus of Gangchil Paribahan, Shreenagar circle assistant superintend of police Mia Kutubur Rahman said.
Of the deceased, Jamal Munshi, 50, Yasin Hawlader, 48, Raton Talukdar, 45, and Nuruddin, 55, died on the spot while Juba Dal joint secretary Nuruzzaman, 48, died in a hospital in the capital.
The jeep driver, Jalal Ahmed, was admitted to the intensive care unit at the Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital in the capital with critical injuries.
At least six others from both the vehicles were injured in the accident and they were rushed to
Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Mia Kutubur Rahman said that the accident took place when Auranga’s jeep skidded off on the right side of the road as its rear tyre burst and collided head on with a bus coming from the opposite direction.
The police seized the bus but the driver went away, said Zakiur Rahman.
Auranga was elected lawmaker from Shariatpur-1 constituency twice — first in 1991 as an Awami League candidate and in 2001 as an independent candidate.
Later, he joined Bangladesh Nationalist Party and became a member of its executive committee.
In 2008 national elections, he lost the constituency to Awami League candidate Abdur Razzak.
The family was yet to fix the time for Auranga’s burial.
His family members said that he was forced to leave the country in 80s. He returned in 90s.
In 90s, he had served five years in jail in a case filed for killing an intelligence officer.
He was an aspirant candidate from the Shariatpur-1 constituency from BNP.
