The Jahangirnagar University authorities on Monday gave a written permission allowing permanent entry of police administration into the campus.
The JU vice-chancellor, Anwar Hossain, confirmed the matter at his office after an emergence syndicate meeting on the day. ‘The authorities made the decision of allowing the police on the campus for ensuring security but they are not allowed to enter the dormitories without permission,’ the VC said.
Teachers and students condemned the step and expressed their worry regarding the matter.
The syndicate member, Professor Hanif Ali, said the decision was not taken in the syndicate meeting.
‘The ongoing situation does not demand emergency police deployment,’ he said.
‘The decision is an evidence of the VC’s autocratic acts,’ he added.
The Students’ Union president, Zahidul Islam Zinnah, said the decision of allowing the police on an autonomous university campus was unacceptable.
‘We urge the authorities to undo their act as soon as possible,’ he added.
The JUTA also expressed their solidarity with the students demand.
The JUTA president, Ajit Kumar Masumdar, said the VC had no right to take such a decision on his own.
The university experienced an enormous vandalism and loses on august 1, 2, 2012 when the authorities allowed the police on the campus.
