The Sylhet Metropolitan Police and businesspersons are on a move to set up closed-circuit cameras at main city points and in the shopping centers and markets for ensuring security of business establishments. The initiative has been taken following the robbery at three jewellery shops of Nehar Market at Zindabazar in the city. Armed robbers on Wednesday evening looted 420 bharis of gold ornaments of Al Baraka Jewelers after blasting bombs and firing bullets that killed a night guard and seriously injured the manager and a salesperson of the jewelers.
The robbers also vandalised nearby shops — Kamla Banadar Jewelers and Parama Jewelers.
Sheikh Makhan Miah, president of Sylhet District Bebsaye Oikya Kalyan Parishad, a body of businesspersons, told New Age of their initiative to install CC cameras in the city markets.
‘We have requested the authorities of all markets in the city for setting up CC camera in front and inside their respective markets to ensure security of the business establishments and businesspersons,’ he said.
Makhan Miah added that the businessmen concerned would be responsible for set up the cameras, if the market authorities do not agreed in implementing the job.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police commissioner Nibas Chandra Majhi told New Age on Monday that the higher authorities of the law-enforcement agency had already been informed of the matter.
‘A formal proposal for setting up CC cameras in front of the major shopping centers and a the key installation points in the city would be sent, if we get a positive nod from the authorities concerned in this regard,’ he added.
He said a period of three to four months is needed to bring the entire city under the CC camera coverage.
‘But, it could be possible to install the devices at least at the main key installations in the city in a short time,’ the SMP commissioner said.
Nehar Market Bebsayee Samiti general secretary Amzad Ali told New Age that they were also discussing the matter with the shop owners of the market and they would reach in a final decision in this regard within the next few days.
