The traditional bamboo-based cottage industries are facing setback in Kurigram. A large number of people were engaged in different bamboo-based industries in nine upazilas of the district, including the Sadar upazila, which make different household articles. But these industries are various problems putting the poor people into difficult situation.
Usually the rural people make the bamboo articles in dull seasons like flood season and rainy season. As the harvesting of Boro paddy is coming closer, the bamboo articles will be needed more and demand of these articles will get a boost.
In poor families, the women were seen engage themselves in making the bamboo-based articles during the leisure period of their work. The prices of bamboo and gone up, which has made the situation difficult for the poor people. They are in confusion whether people will buy the articles with high prices. There is no permanent market for selling bamboos. Only a makeshift market is there in front of central Eidgah maidan, which has been shifted recently on the side of Kurigram-chilmari road. One bamboo trader said prices of bamboo has gone up because of low production of the essential item. He said bamboo cultivation was in the wane for the prices is going up.
