The government has set toll rates for using the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel built under the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram, ranging from 200 Tk for cars to 1,000 Tk for 4-axle trailers, which is slated for inauguration in September.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges issued a circular in this regard on Thursday, signed by Deputy Secretary of Bridge Division Abul Hasan.
The toll will be applicable on the day the tunnel will be opened to public, read the gazette.
As per the gazette, a car or jeep or pickup van has to pay Tk 200 for crossing the tunnel, while a microbus has to pay Tk 250.
Toll for a bus with 31 seats and below would be Tk 300 while Tk 400 for bus above 32 seats and Tk 500 for bus with three axles.
A 5-tonne truck has to pay Tk 400, it added. A truck with 5.01 to 8 tonnes loading capacity will have to pay Tk 500 and truck with 8.01 to 11 tonnes loading capacity Tk 600.
Trailers (3 axles) have to pay Tk800, trailers (4 axles) Tk1,000 and Tk200 for each axle above 4, reads the notice.
The 9.1km tunnel, the first of its kind in South Asia, is being built to help develop a modern communication system between Dhaka, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar. It will also be linked to the Asian Highway.
After revisions, the cost of the project rose to Tk 10,690 crore. The deadline for the project was set in December this year.
