Bangladesh continued their good performance for the second day running in the Special Olympics: Asia Pacific Games in Newcastle, Australia. On the second day, Bangladesh won a total of nine medals – seven of them gold. The Bangladeshi contingent also claimed a silver and bronze medal.
From the seven golds, Bangladesh clinched four gold medals in badminton, two in long jump and one in swimming on Tuesday.
Munni Akter was the first Bangladeshi to win gold in the badminton category. Besides Munni, Rabeya Khatun, Mizanur Rahman and Ashiqul Islam also attained gold medals in badminton.
Chaity Akter and Humayun Kabir also made Bangladesh proud by winning gold medals in long jump. Parul Akter claimed the final gold on the day in the 50 metre breaststroke in swimming.
Misti Akter and Ratan Miah won silver and bronze respectively in long jump.
In the Games’ opening day, Bangladesh made a promising start in cricket and football. In cricket, Bangladesh thrashed India by the comprehensive margin of 10 wickets while the Bangladesh football team defeated Malaysia 4-2.
Earlier, the opening ceremony of the seven-day long Special Olympics: Asia Pacific Games was held at the Hunter stadium in Newcastle, Australia on Sunday.
Seven venues in Newcastle were selected for hosting the Special Olympics with the Games’ closing ceremony scheduled for December 7.
