Bangladesh is currently earning Tk 40 crore by exporting charcoal to different countries annually.
At present, around 7,071 tonnes of charcoal are produced in about 40 factories in several districts in the country including Faridpur, Rajbari, and Magura, the textiles and jute ministry said in a press release yesterday.
In addition to increasing export earnings and revenues by increasing charcoal production, there is a possibility of creating direct and indirect employment opportunities for about 20,000 people, the ministry said.
Charcoal contains 75 per cent of carbon, which is used as raw material for water purification, fireworks, life-saving anti-toxin tablets, cosmetics, photocopiers, and computer ink.
The production of charcoal from jute sticks has created new possibilities for the multipurpose use of jute. The charcoal is prepared by burning, cooling and compressing the jute stick in the appropriate process at a certain temperature.
Aiming to encourage the farms and increase the production of charcoal, the jute and textile ministry has already formulated a policy, the ministry said.
