Bangladesh July uprising leader Osman Hadi dies

Gunshot-injured Sharif Osman Hadi, the convener of the Inquilab Mancha and one of the organisers of the July uprising, breathed his last under treatment in Singapore at around 9:30pm Bangladesh time.

Inquilab Mancha member-secretary Abdullah Al Jaber confirmed his death to New Age at around 10:15pm.

‘We have come to know over telephone from his elder brother Omar, who is accompanying Hadi in Singapore, that Osman Hadi passed away at around 9:30pm,’ Jaber said, adding that the doctors could not conduct his surgery due his unstable condition.

Later, at 11:20pm, interim government chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in an address to the nation expressed deep condolences over the death of Hadi.

He announced national mourning for Saturday and called upon the country’s people to have patience and stay calm.

As the news of Hadi’s death spread, people, including students and July uprising fighters, held protests in Dhaka and other places across the country.

Osman Hadi, who was very vocal against Indian hegemony and an aspiring independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad polls, was shot in the head on December 12 in the city.

Earlier in the day, the family of critically injured Hadi, has approved his surgery in Singapore as his health condition remained ‘very critical’.

Different orginsations and political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, National Citizen Party, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh, expressed deep condolences over the death of the young politician.

Meanwhile, police in their petition for remand of Sivion Dio and Sanjay Chisim, who help people to cross the border illegally, said that the duo helped prime accused Faisal Karim Masud and his associates to flee the country to India.

The police found evidence on the basis of interrogation and technological suppor that Faisal and his associates had fled to India with the support of Sivion and Sanjay, the petition said.

Besides, protests at the assassination attempt on Hadi continued on Thursday demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and the resignation of home adviser retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury for the failure to arrest them yet.

Referring to Hadi’s family, the Inquilab Mancha in a Facebook post on Thursday afternoon said that the family had granted permission for a surgery on Hadi to be carried out in Singapore.

It described Hadi’s present health condition as being in between life and death.

The interim government’s advisory council on Thursday discussed Hadi’s health condition at its meeting, said a press release shared by the chief adviser’s press wing, saying that Hadi’s condition remained extremely critical.

Regarding Hadi’s situation, Singapore foreign minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan has been in regular contact with chief adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, providing updates, it said.

‘A senior official of Bangladesh foreign ministry arrived in Singapore yesterday (Wednesday). The official is directly overseeing Hadi’s medical treatment,’ said the press release.

Jatiya Chhatrashakti, the student wing of the National Citizen Party, held a protest rally at Shahbagh in the capital demanding immediate arrest of the perpetrators and resignation of the home adviser for alleged failure to arrest them yet.

The student body’s president Zahid Ahsan said, ‘The assailants in the shooting on Hadi must be arrested immediately.’

He alleged that home adviser Jahangir was still in the position despite his long failure to maintain the law and order as a vested group wanted to take advantage of the situation during the forthcoming national elections.

The protesters also burnt an effigy of the home adviser after the protest rally.

Meanwhile, the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch on Thursday afternoon produced Sivion Dio and Sanjay Chisim before a Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court that allowed the police to take them in custody for three days each for interrogation in Hadi’s attempted murder case, reported New Age Court Correspondent.

The remand petition also alleged that Sivion was a relative of a local activist of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, and involved in helping people to cross the border illegally.

It appealed the court to grant seven-day remand each to interrogate them to ascertain whose plan and advice led the assailants to cross the border.

In addition, remand is necessary to identify the people who planned the attack on Hadi and other people involved, to recover the weapons used in the assassination attempt, to identify the planners, financiers and accomplices of the attack, the petition said.

Critically injured Hadi was airlifted to Singapore from Dhaka for advanced medical treatment on Monday.

He is undergoing treatment at the Singapore General Hospital while the Inquilab Mancha sought prayers from the public for his recovery.

The platform also called on his supporters across Bangladesh to gather at Shahbagh demanding justice if Hadi dies.

It also warned that protesters would continue their sit-in at Shahbagh until those responsible for the attack were arrested.

The Inquilab Mancha also threatened to bring the country to a standstill if the assailants were not arrested.

Additionally, the platform’s statement asserted that if the accused had fled to India, the Bangladesh government should discuss with Indian authorities to ensure the assailants’ arrest and repatriation.

Law enforcers have so far arrested at least 10 people for their suspected involvement in the December 12 attack on aspiring independent candidate Hadi in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election for the Dhaka-8 constituency.

It is believed that the main identified assailants, Alamgir Sheikh, the motorcycle rider, and the pillion of the motorcycle, Faisal Karim Masud, the suspected shooter, who took part in Hadi’s electoral campaign for a few days, fled to India illegally through the Haluaghat border in Mymensingh.

On December 12, Hadi was shot in the head in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar while he was conducting his electioneering, a day after the Election Commission announced the schedule for the 13th JS elections and the national referendum on February 12, 2026.
