Bangladesh got off to a flying start in the 42nd Chess Olympiad as both the men’s and women’s team won in their respective opening round games in Baku, Azerbaijan on Friday.
Bangladesh men’s team thrashed San Marino by 4-0 points with Grand Masters Enamul Hossain Razib, Abdullah Al Rakib, Niaz Murshed and International Master Mohammad Minhaz Uddin winning their respective matches.
In the women’s section, Bangladesh also surpassed all the expectations to beat Sudan 4-0 with Women’s International Masters Shamima Akter Liza, Rani Hamid and Women’s Fede Masters Sharmin Sultana Shirin and Nazrana Khan Eva all posting a win.
Razib beat Paul Rossini, Rakib defeated Berardi Giancarlo, Niaz overcame the challenge of Maccapani Massimiliano while Minhaz got the better of Volpinari Danilo.
Liza beat Najwa Mohammed Ahmed, veteran Rani defeated Zienab Mustafa Mansour, Shirin overcame Ibtihal Mohammed and Nazrana prevailed over Zienab Mustafa Mansour of Sudan respectively.
A total of 180 teams from 175 countries and 3 organisations are taking part in the men’s open section while 140 teams from 136 countries and 2 organisations are participating in women’s section.
On Saturday, in the open section, Bangladesh men’s were due to play against giants Norway while women’s team was expected to face Vietnam.
