The Bangladesh Under-19s began their campaign in the International Cricket Council U-19 World Cup in resounding fashion on Saturday after thrashing Afghanistan by 10 wickets in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The young Tigers decided to field first after winning the toss and their decision paid dividends as the Afghans were all out for 212 in 50 overs in the face of some disciplined bowling.
The Afghan openers posted 69 runs for the opening wicket but it was all downhill from there as they lost their last 10 wickets for 143 runs.
Mosaddek Hossain (3-19) bowled brilliantly and he was ably supported by Rahatul Ferdous (2-38) and Abu Haider (1-41).
The fielders complemented the good work of their bowlers as they affected four run outs.
In reply, the young Bangladeshi openers led their side to a comprehensive victory in 42.3 overs, putting on 216 runs for the undefeated opening stand. Victory was sealed with 45 balls still remaining.
Shadman Islam cracked 14 boundaries and a six in his unbeaten 142-ball 126 while Joyraz Sheik struck 11 fours in his 81 not out off 114 deliveries.
The young Tigers’ next Group B opponents are Namibia, whom they face on Monday before encountering Australia in the final group game on Wednesday.
One more win from their two remaining group games will be enough to take Bangladesh to the Super League knockout quarterfinals.
